The Process

THE PROJECT & MY ROLE
LeddarTech and Humber College collaborated to develop a student competition where students design the interface and front interior of a vehicle concept for five to ten years into the future. The goal was for students to work in groups to develop designs that incorporate many features that LeddarTech can use with their outward sensing technology, and to solve a problem faced by drivers of a specific user group.

RESEARCH
We started research by choosing a user group. Then we researched that user and their driving wants and needs.

We also researched LeddarTech and their outward sensing technology to choose what technology we wanted to integrate into our design.

We researched current HMI design trends and style trends to choose what we wanted our design to look like.

Moreover, we researched the Mazda 3 Compact Sedan, since we wanted to redesign it and needed to understand its existing features and design.

IDEATION

We drew concept sketches of futuristic vehicle interiors and possible technologies to incorporate into them. My concept sketches are shown to the left.

Our group put all our sketches on the board and marked out what features we wanted to keep in the next design phase.

FIGMA & PROTOTYPING

Afterward, the designs of the screens were made using Figma. These are shown to the left. After the screen designs were made, they were printed to scale with the vehicle interior that I designed in Photoshop. The screens were placed on the vehicle printout to test the scale. All the work shown to the left here was done by me.

REFINEMENT

The vehicle interior design and Figma screen designs were refined. The light on the vehicle interior was made thinner so that it wasn't too overwhelming for the driver. We chose one specific style guide for the screen design and just a few of the Figma screens to develop further using this style guide.

TAKEAWAYS

This was my first HMI design. It was also my first time learning about outward sensing technologies for autonomous vehicles. I enjoyed designing the vehicle interior, and the vehicle screen, and learning about vehicle outward sensing technology. I think I enjoyed it most because it was new to me.

Please note that this project was completed as a group of seven.

My specific contributions to the project were the following:

1) Conducted interviews and sent out research surveys

2) Provided insight into what technologies I thought we should include in the design (this can be seen in my concept sketches)

3) Designed the entire vehicle interior and screen placements and rendered them in Photoshop

4) Designed the passenger screen and window control screens

5) Was partially responsible for designing and assembling the final presentation
